Spanish alternative investment manager Bankinter Investment and renewables investor Plenium Partners have secured a EUR-76-million senior project finance facility from ING and UniCredit to refinance a portfolio of four biomethane plant projects in Italy, a press release said.<\/p>\n
The facility consolidates the financing of the portfolio into a single multi-borrower structure as the assets enter operation, Bankinter Investment and Plenium said.<\/p>\n
ING and UniCredit acted as global coordinators, mandated lead arrangers and bookrunners, with ING also serving as facility agent. The financing includes a senior term loan as well as ancillary VAT and debt service reserve facilities.<\/p>\n
The four plants, located in northern and central Italy and connected to the country’s gas grid, will have combined production capacity of about 1,800 standard cubic metres per hour (scm\/h). The refinancing will also support their conversion from biogas to biomethane production, the companies said.<\/p>\n
The assets are held through the Ecualia Capital fund and benefit from Italy’s feed-in premium framework administered by GSE, the country’s renewable energy incentive manager.<\/p>\n
Once fully operational, the plants are expected to produce about 160 GWh of renewable biomethane a year, equivalent to the average annual gas consumption of about 10,500 Italian households, the companies said.<\/p>\n
The facilities will use agricultural and livestock by-products as feedstock and are expected to avoid about 31,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by replacing fossil natural gas, the statement added.<\/p>\n
Bankinter Investment, which is the alternative investment arm of Spanish bank Bankinter, and Madrid-based fund manager Plenium Partners recently acquired biomethane platform BG Holding in Italy through their Ecualia Capital fund. The deal gave the partnership two biogas plants switching to biomethane and nearing commercial operation.<\/p>\n
