Australia’s Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd has begun the construction of a downstream central lithium chemical plant in Germany as part of its integrated lithium and renewable energy project Lionheart.<\/p>\n
The facility will be located at Infraserv Industrial Park Hoechst in Frankfurt and will convert lithium chloride into lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) using electrolysis.<\/p>\n
In its initial phase, Lionheart aims to achieve a production capacity of 24,000 tonnes of LHM annually, which is sufficient for about 500,000 electric vehicles. In addition, 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of heat will be generated as a co-product for local consumers per year.<\/p>\n
First commercial LHM production is targeted to begin in 2028.<\/p>\n
As part of the Lionheart initiative, Vulcan also broke ground on a combined upstream geothermal and lithium extraction plant in Landau in December. The investment decision on the first phase of the project was made after the company secured financing of EUR 2.2 billion.<\/p>\n
